40 Gallon Fish Tank

40 Gallon Fish Tank

Your Fish Tank - How big should it be?

It is tempting, when you are starting in the hobby of aquarium keeping, to keep things small. It seems logical that a goldfish bowl or a small tank will be easier to maintain than one of these monsters-wall, but in reality is quite the opposite.

The bigger the tank, the easier it is to care. A higher volume of water helps to minimize the effect of temperature changes, pH changes, and biological toxins that come from the decomposition of vegetable and fish wastes. With more dispersed toxins in the water, the filters have more time to do their job, while your fish stay healthy. All this means that from aquarium hobbyists do not have much to fear from common early mistakes.

Also remember that small fish are usually more active than larger fish, and are much happier with more space to swim in, so do not get a small tank just because you like little fish!

In my opinion, the best size to start is a standard 40 or 55 gallon rectangular tank. These are easy to find, lots of standard accessories are relatively inexpensive and are easy to care. You do not need much time to change the water or to maintain other rule, all parts of the tank are easy to reach, and you are less likely to have problems with algae growth in a smaller, narrower tank.

Do yourself a disservice when looking to buy tanks. Start with glass, acrylic, it has its own problems difficult to master. Check containers glass or a symbol of safety, certification of the strength of the silicone putty used to hold together the glass panels. Also be sure to get a tight cover that is easy to clean - you'll need to keep the fish well bullies and evaporation of water in the tank, and is inevitably going to be filmed or crusty in time.

Buy a posture that is sufficient to support the weight of your tank - remember that a 40 gallon tank can weigh up to five hundred pounds when full water and gravel! Choose the location of your tank carefully to make sure the floor is level and solid and direct sunlight does not enter the tank during certain parts of the day (it throwing off temperature maintenance).

Set the stand, and do anything you need to make sure it is absolutely level - Nothing out of order will put pressure on the glass of his tank, or joints, and will over time. Not a good scenario!

Speaking of which, the Most modern fish tanks will never leak, break, or fall, but accidents happen, and it would not hurt to add a rider on your homeowner's or renter to cover the potential water damage to your carpet or floor.
